Marines in Combat
The word marine comes from the Latin “marinus”, which can be understood to mean “of the sea”. That is exactly what marines historically were; they were originally part of the navy. However, as the years went on and as evolution of warfare went on, this specialized military element have undergone changes both in the roles they play during actual combat and the necessary skills required of their combat units.
Role of Marines in Combat
The principal role of marines in combat is designated in areas close to the shore. They are to operate from ships. Part of the combat action they are trained on includes landing on the littoral zone and the securing of critical points where troops would land.
Combat units are primarily deployed from landing craft, warships, helicopters, amphibious vehicles, and other forms of hovercraft. However, some marine units are also known to have parachute insertion capabilities. Other duties of these soldiers include port and ship security and boarding operations.
Historic and Early Marine Forces
Marines have been around for centuries. This form of military force has been recognized and utilized even in the earliest imperial eras of the world. One of the earliest marine forces in the world was integrated into the Roman Navy. These military units were trained both for land service and raiding operations.
The Byzantine navy employed marines as rowers of their imperial ships. A separate regiment was also established by Emperor Basil I and was based in Constantinople. These were incorporated into the elite troops of the empire and were made professional troops.
The Confederate States Marine Corps was also an early marine branch of the Confederate Navy. It was established on March 16, 1861. The Netherlands also established one of the earliest Marine Corps in December 10, 1665.
Combat Must Haves
Today’s modern marines in combat are expected to have certain equipment and tools that will help them through the rigorous and dangerous combat zones. The list was enumerated by marines who have extensive combat experience and was published in an official magazine of the Marine Corps.
The list includes some things that are obviously very helpful in such stressful circumstances that a marine would find himself in. However, the list also includes items that one would not immediately think about unless you have gone through such an experience yourself.
Combat Related Equipment
Of course, other than their firearms, marines in combat will require other pieces of equipment to help them survive and arise victorious in the combat zone. They will require binoculars and combat optical gun sights. Kevlar cushions, knee and elbow pads, and gloves provide necessary protection.
Night vision goggles become quite indispensable when fighting in the dark cover of night. Personnel radios are indispensable especially in a heavy conflict since communication and maneuverability are important aspects of combat.
Non-Combat Related Equipment
Other pieces of equipment make life a lot easier for marines in combat. For instance, a day pack or Alice makes carrying 100 pounds worth of equipment on your back a lot more livable. A three point sling will ease your worries about dropping your weapon especially when you’re required to maneuver across dangerous terrain.
A watch and compass will help a combat fighter figure out his heading. An extra pair of socks will keep battle hardened feet comfortable and dry. A global positioning system will help soldiers determine where they are and where they’re supposed to be positioned. Carabineers make all other necessary equipment within immediate reach. A high powered flashlight is indispensable during the night.
Supplies and Other Equipment
Marines in combat will require some supplies that will make life in the field a lot easier. For instance, energy bars provide a quick snack or meal that is easy to grab from your pocket. Believe or not, baby wipes go a long way for the combat soldier. You don’t have much time for personal hygiene when you’re engaging the enemy. A poncho liner and a poncho will help soldiers remain warm during cold nights.
